Diagnosis and Treatment of Hip Dislocation (Developmental Hip Dysplasia) in Children

The most critical orthopedic problems that occur in infancy are hip dislocations. The process conducted by Assoc. Dr. İlker Sarıkaya in our hospital focuses on early diagnosis and non-surgical solutions.

Early Diagnosis: With hip ultrasound performed in the first 6 months, retardation in hip development (dysplasia) is detected and close to 100% success is achieved with Pavlik Bandage or device treatments.
Late Staying Cases: In dislocations that are noticed after walking, open reduction and bone shaping (osteotomy) operations aimed at putting the hip in place are performed with the advanced technological facilities of our hospital.
Perthes Disease: In Perthes disease, which occurs in childhood due to problems in the vessels that feed the hip joint, special treatment protocols are applied that maintain the joint mobility and prevent bone destruction.

Height Extension Surgery and Leg Length Inequality Treatments

Congenital, post-infectious or traumatic leg shortening can be treated today with modern surgical techniques.

Service Areas: Achondroplasia (Dwarfism), Hypoplasia, Leg Length Inequality and Arm Extension.
Methods: A controlled extension of the bone is achieved using external fixators (externally installed devices) or state-of-the-art intramedullary nails (intra-bone extension).
Deformity Correction: Curvatures known as “O Leg” (Genu Varum) or “X Leg” (Genu Valgum) are prevented from experiencing joint calcification in the future by interfering with growth plaques (hemiepiphysiodesis) or by bone incisions.

Cerebral Palsy (Cerebral Palsy) and Neuromuscular Orthopedic Approaches

For children who have problems with muscle and bone development due to neurological reasons, a comprehensive follow-up program is implemented in our hospital.

Personalized Treatment: The condition of each child is different, so the treatment plan is determined based on the results of Computerized Walking Analysis.
Applications: To remove excessive stiffness (spasticity) in the muscles, injections of Botulinum Toxin (Botox), tendon transfers and contracture opening operations are performed.
Target: It is to improve the quality of walking of the child, reduce wheelchair addiction and enable him to move independently in everyday life.

Deformity Surgery in Children: Treatment of Bone Curvature and Deformities

Bone curvatures and joint deformities seen in childhood are not only an aesthetic problem, but medical conditions that directly affect the child's future mobility and joint health. In our hospital, deformity surgery operations performed by Assoc. Dr. İlker Sarıkaya are corrected by congenital or later deformities (due to trauma, infection, etc.) with modern orthopedic methods.

In What Cases Is Deformity Surgery Necessary?

● Knee Curvices: Colloquially “O Leg” (Genu Varum) or “X Leg” (Genu Valgum).
● Limb Shortness and Curvature: Structural asymmetries seen in the arms or legs.
● Foot Disorders: Advanced flat insoles, high curvature (Kavovarus) or Echinus (toe walking).
● Hip Development Problems: Bone arrangement disorders that develop after hip dislocation.

Modern Surgical Techniques Applied in Our Hospital

  1. Hemiepiphysiodesis (Growth Guidance):
It is a “minimally invasive” method that is practiced in children who are still growing.
  2. Osteotomy (Bone Shaping):
It is the process of surgically cutting the bone and repositioning it at the right angle.
  3. External Fixator and Ilizarov Method:
It is applied in cases where severe shortening is accompanied by or there are multifaceted curvatures.

Recovery Process and Follow-up

Deformity surgery is a process that requires patience and specialist follow-up. The treatment plan is prepared individually with millimeter measurements and radiological analyzes performed before surgery.

Childhood Scoliosis and Spinal Curvature

Monitoring the health of the spine in children of growing age prevents breathing and posture disorders that may occur in the future.

Early Diagnosis: With scoliosis and kyphosis (hump) scans, the degree of curvature is determined.
Treatment Options: In mild cases, special exercises are applied, in moderate cases, high-tech corset treatments.
Surgical Intervention: With advanced curvatures, the spine is restored to health by “moving systems” or “fusion” techniques that do not hinder the growth of the child.

Treatment of Spasticity in Children and Botox Applications

In neurological and orthopedic diseases that proceed with muscle stiffness (spasticity) in children, Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injection to increase mobility and reduce pain is an effective method of medical treatment.

In What Cases Is Botox Treatment Applied?

● Cerebral Palsy (Cerebral Palsy)
● Fingertip walking
● Congenital muscle shortening
● Nerve palsy

Application Process and Effect

● Relaxation and Movement
● Synergy with Physical Therapy
● Duration and Repetition

Why Botox Treatment?

  1. May postpone surgery
  2. There is no age limit
  3. It is a comfortable process

Brachial Plexus Palsy: Congenital Arm Paralysis in Infants and Treatment Ways

This condition, which occurs as a result of damage to the nerve network in the shoulder area (Brachiel Plexus) during childbirth, can be largely treated with current approaches.

What Is Brachial Plexus and Why Does It Occur?

● Birth of large babies
● Difficult and intrusive births
● Breast-arrival births

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Less movement of the arm of the baby, immobility and loss of grip.

Treatment Approaches: Timing Is Everything
  1. First Stage (0—6 Months): Physical therapy and observation
  2. Non-Developmental Cases (3—9 Months): Microsurgery
  3. Advanced Stage (Age 2 and Up): Secondary Surgeons
Why Central Hospital?

Multidisciplinary approach and support of children's physiotherapy.

Arm Extension Surgery: Aesthetic and Functional Solutions

Arm length disparities can lead to aesthetic as well as functional problems.

Why is Arm Extension Surgery Done?

● Congenital abbreviations
● Post-traumatic situations
● Losses due to infection
● Functional needs

Extension Methods and Process

  1. External fixator
  2. Combined and minimally invasive methods

How Do They Proceed With The Treatment Process?

● Planning
● Extension stage
● Osteossification and rehabilitation
