Prostate MRI Fusion Biopsy is a targeted, precise, and modern biopsy technique used in patients with suspected prostate cancer.
It is based on matching (fusing) suspicious areas seen on multiparametric prostate MRI with real-time ultrasound images, allowing the biopsy needle to be directed exactly to these lesions.

Compared with the traditional “blind” biopsy, the cancer detection rate is significantly higher.

How Is MRI Fusion Biopsy Performed?

  • A multiparametric prostate MRI is performed.
  • Suspicious PIRADS lesions identified on MRI are marked.
  • During the biopsy, real-time ultrasound imaging is obtained with a transrectal probe.
  • MRI images are fused with ultrasound images using specialized computer software.
  • Suspicious areas become clearly visible on the screen, and the biopsy needle is guided precisely to the target.

The procedure can be performed via the transrectal or transperineal approach.

Advantages of MRI Fusion Biopsy

Higher Cancer Detection Rate

  • Detects clinically significant prostate cancer at a much higher rate than standard biopsy
  • Reduces unnecessary repeat biopsies

Targeted “Precision” Biopsy

Because suspicious MRI lesions are marked with millimetric accuracy:

  • Unnecessary sampling is reduced
  • Tissue is taken directly from the most suspicious region
  • Improves the likelihood of early diagnosis

Advantageous Even in Large Prostates

In classical biopsy, the lesion may be missed in large prostates because its location is unknown.MRI fusion biopsy identifies the suspicious area precisely—regardless of prostate size.

Reduces Unnecessary Treatment and Follow-Up

Helps avoid overtreatment of clinically insignificant cancers and provides more reliable data for active surveillance planning.

More Reliable Pathology Results

Targeted samples give the pathologist more accurate information and increase diagnostic clarity.

Prostate MRI Fusion Biopsy is one of the most sensitive and advanced technologies available today for diagnosing prostate cancer.
Compared with conventional biopsy, it is more accurate, more reliable, and associated with a lower complication rate, making it the preferred method in many modern centers.
