RSV Threatens Not Only Children, But Adults Too: A “Single Dose” Measure Against Pneumonia Risk!

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), commonly known as childhood disease, can actually have consequences as dangerous as the flu for adults and especially the elderly. Experts warn that RSV can lead to severe pneumonia (pneumonia) in adults, and hospitalization rates are steadily increasing.

It can be as severe as the flu

RSV doesn't just start out like a simple upper respiratory infection in adults. Research in recent years shows that this virus is similar in weight to influenza (influenza) and poses a vital risk, especially in individuals with low lung capacity. Prolonged cough, wheezing and severe shortness of breath, which are among the symptoms, often combined with attacks of bacterial pneumonia or COPD, can aggravate the picture.

Who is more at risk?

RSV seriously increases the risk of “lower respiratory tract infection”, especially in individuals in the following group:

  • all individuals over 60-65 years old,
  • Those with chronic diseases such as COPD, asthma or heart failure,
  • Patients with diabetes and renal failure,
  • People with weakened immune systems and the elderly living in a nursing home.

There is no specific treatment, it must be protected! There is no specific antiviral treatment for RSV infection in adults that directly destroys the virus. Treatment is usually carried out by supportive methods and, in severe cases, with oxygen support in the hospital. The fact that treatment options are limited takes the “protection” factor to a vital point.

Next-Generation RSV Vaccine: Powerful Protection with a Single Dose

The RSV vaccine, one of the most important health measures to be taken before entering the winter months, offers a protective shield, especially for individuals in the risk group. The critical information that experts share about the vaccine is as follows:

  • High Success: The vaccine significantly reduces severe RSV infections and the risk of hospitalization.
  • Practical Application: These vaccines, which do not contain live viruses, are administered as a single dose.
  • Combined Use: It can be safely done in the same period as flu and COVID-19 vaccines (provided they are from different arms).

Important Reminder: It is of great importance that individuals with advanced age or chronic illness receive information from their physician about the RSV vaccine in order to maintain their quality of life before the winter season.
