What Is Scoliosis?

What Is Scoliosis?

coliosis is a disorder that occurs when the spine is tilted abnormally sideways. It is usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. The cause of childhood scoliosis is usually unknown; however, it can also occur in individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy (cerebral palsy) and muscular dystrophy. Most cases of scoliosis have a mild course. However, some spinal curvatures can worsen with age. Typical signs of scoliosis include noticeable spinal curvature, one shoulder being higher than the other, and one shoulder or hip being more prominent.

What Are the Causes of Scoliosis?

What Are the Causes of Scoliosis?

In about 80% of cases of scoliosis, a clear cause cannot be ascertained. It is thought that factors such as poor posture, insufficient exercise or an unbalanced diet may play a role in the development of scoliosis. In addition to this, genetic predisposition can also play a role in the occurrence of the disease. Failure of the bones of the spine to develop properly in the womb, neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, or wear and tear on the spine with age are among the main causes of scoliosis.

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis is usually diagnosed by physical examination, X-ray, spine graph, CT (Computed Tomography) scan, or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Treatment is planned depending on the age of the patient, the degree of curvature of the spine and whether it worsens over time. In infants and young children, treatment may not be needed, as the curvature of the spine may improve on its own over time. In children of growing age, the use of a back corset or plastic corset may be recommended to prevent the progression of spinal curvature.

In curvatures that cannot be stopped with a corset, if the curvature is over 40 degrees, the curvature should be corrected with surgery. Ageha, the degree of maturity of the skeletal system, the necessity of preventing complications that may develop are considered when deciding for surgery.

The Place of Exercise and Corset in the Treatment of Scoliosis
